There is no single worldwide average cost of stem cell therapy. A joint injection, an intravenous infusion and a hospital stem cell transplant involve different procedures and levels of care.

Stem cell quality: what to check beyond the price
Very low advertised prices do exist. Check whether the quote describes a live-cell preparation, a cell-free product or only part of a program. Ask for the viable cell dose, culture history and release tests.
Lower overheads, a smaller dose or fewer included services can also change the price. These questions apply in Thailand, Mexico and elsewhere; price alone cannot tell you whether cells are alive or properly processed.
Viable cell dose
Confirm how many cells are alive, the test method and when testing took place. A total cell count can include nonviable cells.
Culture history
Ask for passage number, population doublings and the laboratory’s validated expansion limits. These describe different aspects of the culture process.
Release testing
Request identity, viability, contamination and relevant potency results, together with the transport, storage and thawing conditions.
Cell passage count: what changes during expansion?
A passage is a transfer of cultured cells into a fresh vessel. It gives cells room to continue growing. Passage number counts transfers; population doublings describe how much the cell population has expanded.

More expansion can change cell behavior
During prolonged culture, some mesenchymal stromal cells become senescent: their growth slows and they may become larger and flatter. The illustration shows these reported differences in cell shape.
Senescence is not the same as cell death. A passage number alone cannot tell you the viable dose, potency or likely clinical result, and no single cutoff applies to every cell source and culture process.

Storage also matters: frozen cells are not automatically dead. What matters is the validated freezing, transport and thawing process, together with the relevant test results.

How much do stem cell injections cost per treatment?
